Kristin wanted to take her understanding of food and nutrition further. Here’s how online study made it possible from Montana.

For Natural Chef graduate – Kristin Bond, the journey to becoming a Natural Chef began with something simple: cooking for people she cared about.

Over the years, Kristin took part in meal trains for friends and members of her community who were going through illness or a difficult time. But the more she cooked, the more questions she had.

Could food do more than simply provide a comforting meal? Could a deeper understanding of nutrition and cooking help support people’s health and wellbeing? Could that knowledge then be shared more widely?

Those questions ultimately led Kristin to train as a Natural Chef with The College of Naturopathic Medicine (CNM).

But Kristin’s relationship with food goes back much further.

A relationship with food shaped by place and tradition

Kristin’s approach to food is also rooted in where she grew up. Raised in northern Germany, she was introduced from an early age to a food culture shaped by seasonal ingredients, traditional cooking methods and the importance of gathering around the table.

Those influences have remained an important part of how she cooks today, alongside her interest in nutrition and whole, nourishing foods.

As she has developed her own cooking and food writing, Kristin has found herself increasingly drawn back to these European food traditions and the connection between food, place and everyday life.

It’s a perspective that brings together several of the things that have shaped her journey: a respect for traditional food culture, an interest in nutrition and a desire to understand how the food we prepare can support everyday health and wellbeing.

And when it came to developing those interests further, Kristin was looking for a course that could bring nutrition and cooking together.

And there was another important consideration: where she lived.

Based in a relatively small town in Montana, in the north-western region of the USA, Kristin found that opportunities to study this particular combination of nutrition and culinary skills locally were limited.

That’s where online study opened up a different possibility.

When nutrition knowledge meets the kitchen

Kristin wasn’t looking for a course that focused solely on nutrition. Equally, a conventional culinary qualification wasn’t what she wanted.

She was looking for the connection between the two.

CNM’s Natural Chef Diploma offered that combination – giving her the opportunity to develop an understanding of nutrition alongside practical culinary skills, without having to relocate or fit her life around a traditional classroom timetable.

For Kristin, studying online also meant she could fit her training around her family’s schedule.

That flexibility can make a significant difference for anyone who wants to develop new skills while continuing to manage work, family or other commitments.

A course that starts with the science

One of the aspects Kristin particularly valued was the way the course builds a foundation of knowledge before bringing it into the kitchen.

Kristin’s Natural Chef training started with the body – exploring the different body systems, how they function, what they need and how they are fuelled.

From there, the nutritional side became more tangible. Rather than simply learning about nutrients and ingredients in isolation, Kristin could begin to understand how nutrition connects with the way the body functions.

This foundation gave context to the practical side of becoming a Natural Chef.

Because knowing what to cook is only part of the picture.

Understanding why particular foods, ingredients and cooking methods can be used is what allows a Natural Chef to approach food more intentionally.

Learning to put knowledge into practice

Of course, becoming a Natural Chef isn’t just about studying theory.

For Kristin, the culinary element was a highlight of the course.

She enjoyed learning new techniques, trying new recipes and, in particular, taking part in the live cooking tutorials.

Although she was studying online from Montana, these sessions gave her the opportunity to cook alongside an instructor, ask questions and receive feedback in real time.

It’s an important part of the online learning experience: studying remotely doesn’t have to mean studying in isolation.

The combination of independent learning and live practical sessions allows students to develop their knowledge while also putting it into practice.

So, what does a Natural Chef actually do?

For Kristin, being a Natural Chef is about much more than preparing food that happens to be nutritious.

It means understanding nutrition, ingredients and culinary techniques well enough to use food intentionally in support of the body’s needs and overall wellbeing.

It also means recognising that food needs to be enjoyable.

Healthy cooking doesn’t have to mean compromising on flavour, creativity or the pleasure of eating. A Natural Chef brings nutritional understanding into the kitchen while creating food that people genuinely want to eat.

Could online study change what’s possible for you?

Kristin’s experience is a reminder that where you live doesn’t necessarily have to determine what you can study.

Whether you’re based in a small town, balancing family commitments, working alongside your studies or simply looking for a more flexible way to learn, an online Natural Chef course can make specialist training more accessible.

CNM’s Natural Chef Diploma brings together nutrition, health and culinary skills, with online learning designed to give students the flexibility to study from wherever they are.
